My Family's Journey
The first time you see and hold your baby, you have hopes and dreams for them and for their future. You see them growing healthy and strong. For me, fast forward to the day my daughter was 9 years old and was struggling to stay in school. She’s a beautiful, bright girl, but in the formal structure of school she struggled. They put her in a box that she didn’t fit in. I am her mother and I saw the light inside of her. I didn’t want to put labels or restrictions on her. Yet outside sources, her doctors and teachers, began to put labels like ADD and learning disability on my little girl. They were putting limits on her. Not only that, they put her in classes that were much below her capability. I searched for answers. How can I help my daughter? How can I be of service to her? How can I juggle this busy life of mine to support her? In this moment I felt hopeless. I knew her potential. I knew she deserved better. I just didn’t know where to turn.
The doctor encouraged us to put her on medications to help her focus. Against my better judgment, desperate to help her, I did. She was already a small child, and then quickly lost 10 pounds. This was not acceptable! I started to realize, just as I did when I first held her, I’m her mom and I know best what she needs to be healthy and happy. So instead of accepting this band aid approach that the doctors recommended, I decided to take a holistic approach. We took her off the meds and pulled her from school. My goal wasn’t to change her, but to support her. Home schooling allowed us to focus on her strengths and to do just that. We radically shifted the way we shopped, cooked and ate. I thought we had been eating healthy, but like most, we ate the standard American diet (SAD). We also cleared toxins and chemicals from our environment. We learned that what we put in and on our body matters. We changed how we cleaned our home and cared for our bodies. I was shocked to learn that for the first time in centuries, children today have a shorter life expectancy than their parents. I was also shocked to learn of the effects that chemicals have on our bodies. This problem is so much bigger than just my family’s.
And we wonder why the epidemics of obesity, heart disease, cancer, diabetes and autoimmune conditions are so prevalent in our society. We accept them as normal. But what if we don’t have to?
As we stopped looking outside of ourselves for the answers and began to take ownership of our health, things began to shift, and health returned to all of us. She is healthier and stronger. She is back in school and doing very well. My husband was able to get his type 2 diabetes under control. My Hashimoto’s is in remission. My other daughter’s food sensitivities and allergies improved. Our lives have much less stress and anxiety and much more joy and energy. I know and believe we improved because we eat nutritious food and cleaned up our environment. I won’t sugar coat it and tell you it was easy, it wasn’t. I will tell you it is possible, and it will change your family’s lives forever.
For my family, it has been life changing and none of us would give it up. It comes back to understanding that we have a choice and will no longer hand our health over to others. You know what is best for your family. You know your children better than anyone on this planet. Moms have an innate gift, a gut intuition that tells us when something’s not right. I am so grateful that in that moment of hopelessness, I found my faith and trust in myself to guide our daughter back to health.
